When I was a kid, my family had a cat, called Patch. Patch was originally a very content and affectionate indoor cat. At one point, we started letting Patch go outside and he loved it. He’d come back in the house and curl up in his little ball and be content. But as the months went by, Patch started going out more and more for longer and longer. He had changed. When he was in the house, he was restless and edgy, wanting to go back outside. Sometimes he was gone for a day or two, until eventually, Patch never came home again.
I’ve often thought all of us as humans can learn from the story of Patch. Life is really so simple…

We can study and learn a lot about psychodynamics and personal process. This is, of course, very helpful as we go through life. However, when we are going through emotionally challenging times, it can be difficult to implement what we have learned. When emotions take over, we humans experience them as our truth, regardless of whether we know better or not. Like it or not, we are all incredibly human. When in a human body, we function as humans.
As with spirituality, knowing all about psychodynamics does not make a person psychodynamically healthy. Spirituality and psychodynamic health are both a matter of physiology of the nervous system. Memorizing information is of value, but no substitute for state of mind, state of physiology of the mind. So when emotional challenges come up in life, we must strive to be strong and remember what we have learned. Those times when we need that knowledge most, are the times we find employing it most challenging.
Incidentally, this is one of those blogs that when read, people feel I am talking to them directly. I can right away imagine a number of people who will think that. Please understand that to my mind, this applies to, and is a good reminder for, everyone.

What happens after the body dies usually boils down to a wide range of different beliefs—a matter of faith. These days, what can’t be proven scientifically is usually rejected or so we think. The truth is we can’t even scientifically detect and prove that we have thoughts. The closest we’ve come is to measure brain wave activity. Yet we all know we have thoughts. That’s not a matter of faith or belief…

It was Sunday afternoon so our daughters were home from school.
My wife said, “We’re going to the pumpkin patch to get our Halloween pumpkin. Wanna come?”
“No,” I said, “I’ve got work to do.”
I figured there was always next year to take the kids to the pumpkin patch.
The years went by.
There were many missed pumpkin patches, Christmas trees, and family outings.
I never had any regrets in life.
I was always strong and committed to doing my work and providing for my family.
But the seasonal pumpkin patches of one form or another I missed, I now regret.
The years went by in a flash.
How I wish I got up and went with my family… to the pumpkin patch, through the years, in all its diverse and wondrous forms.
When I was a kid, my childhood seemed to last forever.
But my kids’ childhoods. Well for me, they went by in a flash.
Now the computerized picture frame on my shelf scrolls through family scenes from years gone by.
And there’s the one they took at that pumpkin patch.
Where was I?

Years ago, I left the ashram. I felt so full, filled with my being, overflowing with Knowledge. I needed to share it with the world, so I began lecturing on spirituality and personal growth. At an early lecture, I explained that our divinity lies deeper than thoughts and deeper than emotions. A woman put up her hand and asked, “But what else is there?” Shocked, I responded, “What lies beyond thoughts and emotions is the grandeur of your being, your Self, your divinity. The unbounded source of all life and existence”…
